Overstimulated Dog: Signs, Causes & How to Calm Them

Overstimulation is one of the most common causes of reactive, unsettled behaviour in dogs — and one of the most misunderstood. Here is what it actually looks like, what drives it, and what actually helps.

You have had a full morning. Your dog has run around the park, played with other dogs, and been on two walks. By all logic, they should be exhausted. Instead they are pacing, cannot settle, nudging you every two minutes, and when you finally try to get them to lie down they look at you like you have asked them something impossible.

This is overstimulation. And the reason it feels like the opposite of tiredness is because it is. Your dog's body is physically tired. But their nervous system is still running at full speed — flooded with the stress hormones that high-arousal experiences produce — and it does not know how to come down.

What is overstimulation in dogs?

Overstimulation describes a state where a dog's nervous system has taken on more arousal than it can process and regulate. The result is a dog who appears wired, reactive, restless, or unable to switch off — despite physical exhaustion.

It is important to understand that overstimulation is not caused by too much of a bad thing. It is caused by too much of anything that raises arousal. Exciting play, dog park visits, busy walks, meeting lots of people, training sessions that go too long — all of these can overstimulate a dog, particularly one who is already anxious or reactive.

The underlying mechanism is hormonal. High-arousal experiences trigger the release of adrenaline and cortisol. Research in canine stress physiology indicates that cortisol can remain elevated for several hours after a significant arousal event, and in some cases into the following day. Your dog's body is tired. Their hormones are not.

Signs of an overstimulated dog

Pacing, changing spots repeatedly, getting up and lying down. The nervous system is too activated to rest even when the body is physically tired.

Barking at things they would normally ignore. The arousal threshold has dropped — small stimuli now produce large responses.

Particularly in puppies — an inability to regulate arousal leads to mouthing that feels out of proportion to the situation.

Panting at rest, in a cool room, or long after physical activity has stopped. That is not temperature — that is elevated cortisol.

A dog who knows "sit" perfectly suddenly cannot do it. Their cognitive resources are consumed by arousal regulation.

Signs of an overstimulated puppy

Puppies are particularly susceptible to overstimulation because their nervous systems are still developing and they have less capacity to regulate arousal. Puppy overstimulation often gets labelled as the puppy being hyper or badly behaved when in reality they have simply hit their limit.

Common signs of puppy overstimulation include the zoomies, escalating biting during play that stops responding to redirection, extreme clinginess or complete inability to be settled, and sudden frantic energy that tips into whimpering or crashing. If your puppy regularly hits this state after certain activities — puppy classes, dog park visits, long outings — those activities are likely too much for where their nervous system currently is.

The exercise trap most owners fall into

The most common pattern we see in overstimulated dogs is what might be called the exercise trap. The owner notices the dog is unsettled and gives more exercise to tire them out. High-intensity exercise raises arousal further. The dog is more activated the following day. The owner gives more exercise. The cycle compounds.

High-arousal exercise — fetch, rough play, intense off-lead running, dog park visits — elevates cortisol and adrenaline significantly. These hormones take hours to return to baseline. In anxious or already-stimulated dogs they may remain elevated into the following day, meaning your dog starts tomorrow already carrying today's arousal load.

Overstimulation is a state, not a trait. The same dog can be appropriately stimulated on one day and overstimulated the next — depending entirely on what they have accumulated in the preceding 24 to 48 hours.

How to calm an overstimulated dog

Remove the stimulation immediately
Get them out of the high-stimulus environment. End the play session, leave the dog park, go somewhere quieter. Every additional minute of high arousal makes the comedown harder.

Offer a sniff walk rather than structured exercise
A slow walk in a low-stimulus area where your dog can sniff freely is one of the most effective calming interventions available. Scent processing actively lowers cortisol rather than raising it.

Use enrichment that requires calm focus
Lick mats, scatter feeding, slow-release food toys — these engage the brain in a way that promotes calm rather than arousal. The rhythmic licking motion has a documented calming effect on the nervous system.

Create a calm environment and step back
Reduce household noise and resist the urge to interact to try to settle them. Your engagement — even calm interaction — can maintain arousal. Give them space to come down naturally.

Protect the following day
A significantly overstimulated dog today means a lower threshold tomorrow. Treat the day after a high-stimulation event as a decompression day — quieter walks, no dog park, lower demands.

How to tell overstimulation from under-stimulation

Both can look similar — restlessness, attention-seeking, difficulty settling. The key is what makes it better. An under-stimulated dog responds well to structured activity. An overstimulated dog responds better to decompression. If you try to engage an overstimulated dog with activity and it makes things worse, that is your signal.

The other distinguishing factor is context. If your dog has had a high-stimulation day and is now unsettled — overstimulation is almost certainly the cause. If they have had a quiet day and are restless — under-stimulation is more likely.
